Les recommandations ITU-T K.20, K.21 et K.45 visent à définir les conditions de tests et les seuils de protections aux surtensions et surintensités des équipements de télécommunication.
Trois types de tests sont définis: surtension due à la foudre, induction de courant par les lignes électriques, et contact avec des lignes électriques.
• K.20 teste l’immunité des équipements des centres de télécommunication.
• K.21 teste l’immunité des équipements installés dans les locaux d'abonné.
• K.45 teste l’immunité des équipements installés dans les réseaux d'accès et de jonction.

Ces recommandations concernent tous les équipements reliés au réseau téléphonique.
Il peut éventuellement être étendu à des réseaux privés de type interphone, télécommande, etc.
